Draper
Porthouse Theatre
Designer: Michelle Hunt Souza
This show was my first after the shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I draped and oversaw the build for this show as I was the only draper this season. We built all of the bodices, aprons, and skirts for the entire cast, seen above. The photographs then are of the first fitting & the second fitting with each actor. I decided to mockup the bodices, but go into fabric for the skirts for the first fitting. The skirts are all the same five gore walking skirt pattern, gathered onto a mockup waistband. The only issue we had here was that the designer decided to change the color of the one outfit from a yellow to a green, so we needed to remake a skirt, but that was fairly simple. As the only draper for this production it was quite a project management puzzle to over see all of the costume shop personnel to complete this production. Overall, this was very successful. The biggest challenge was a last minute cast change for the character of Sarah, the mother. This required the designer and I to reconceive of the garment as the two actresses were notably different in shape. This was my first production back after the COVID-19 shutdown and I am pleased with how the garments turned out. Production photographs by Bob Christy. Fitting & process photographs by Grace Keenan
